What is “剣舞/Kenbu" (Sword Dance)? "Kenbu" is a traditional Japanese dance that combines the graceful movements of the gods with the use of a sword to ward off evil. "In the Shintou-ryu, the founder, Hibino Raifu, stated as the above." Furthermore, Naito Masamitsu Nyudo, who succeeded as the second generation successor to Hibino Raifu, also guided his disciples with the belief that 'God and the sword are one,' in other words, in the realm of 'Shinken Ichinyo' as Unity of Sword and Mind. The reason why it is said that "Shintou-ryu Kenbu" is a martial art that has been studied and developed for self-defense since ancient times, based on the foundation of Japanese martial arts, and completed by adding artistic elements to it. Since "Kenbu" (Sword Dance) is a performance that follows the principles of this martial art and is performed in accordance with poetic recitation, it is of no value unless it is performed with a truly sharp sword, resulting in the unity of spirit, sword, and body. There are many sword dances where the sword remains sheathed at the waist without being drawn. However, even in such cases, one must always possess the demeanor of a swordsman rooted in sword techniques. When mastering true sword dance, one's mind and body become enriched, allowing them to fully embody the characters in poems and evoke deep emotions in the audience. Therefore, it is essential to always approach the study of sword dance with a pure heart, striving to learn and master it correctly. By the way, in this text, the characters for "剣舞/Kenbu" (Sword Dance) and "剣武/Kenbu" (Sword Martial Arts) were used. Originally, these terms were employed with the same meaning. However, in the early Taisho period, the founder, Master Hibino Raifu, wrote a book titled "The Way of Sword Martial Arts" (剣武の道), and since then, the term "剣武" (Sword Martial Arts) has been used in the Shintou-ryu school. The reason for this is to ensure that the spirit and form of the martial art are not forgotten. During the founder's era, it was so strict that one had to attain the first dan in Kendo before being taught "剣武/Kenbu" (Sword Martial Arts).
